It's another action-packed weekend as the East Cape Shotokan-Ryu (ECSR) and Rhodes University Shotokan Karate Championships take place.

This year's champs, taking place at the Rhodes Hanger, will be held exclusively for Rhodes, Makana, Joza and ECSR karateka. The champs takes place tomorrow with the action starting from 8.30am.

“This is an ideal opportunity for our karateka to test their skill and ability in what should be an exciting end-of-year tournament finale,” said Gary Grapentin, the head instructor of ECSR.

The events will take place on two tatami mats and there will be computerised scoring systems and visual display units at each arena. Medals will be awarded to the top three in each category. The senior men will also compete for the Roger Adams Floating Trophy in the Rotational Team Kumite category.

The categories include male and female kata (forms) and kumite (fighting) and age-groups range from children to veterans.

“Our aim is to provide an efficient, professional and well-organised karate championship which is open to karateka of all ages and grades. It is hoped that the championship will serve to showcase the principles, integrity and standards of karate-do as a noble sport and a disciplined way of life,” said Grapentin.

Grapentin said another purpose of the championship was to raise the profile of karate in the Makana area and to promote the practice of karate among students at Rhodes University.

“The Championship will also serve to provide the karateka enrolled in our township programme with greater exposure to large-scale karate events”.

Spectators will be able to enjoy an excellent view of the action with seating positioned in close proximity of each arena. Entrance for spectators is R10 per person.
