From Wednesday 12 October to the Friday of that week the officers of the sixth SA Infantry Battalion attended a team building exercise at the picturesque Assegaai Trails. The venue was chosen for its facilities at reasonable prices. Sheila and Ray Riddin’s Assegaai Trails is also located a mere 40km outside of Grahamstown.

The two days were spent mainly doing group forming activities as well as those exercises meant to foster greater understanding among people. We also ran through lectures on officership, leadership and used syndicates to produce outputs we can use to basically “Sharpen the Saw” as Stephen R. Covey puts it in his book “The seven principles of highly effective people”.

Activities obviously also focused on social group forming and pure enjoyment of food and nature as the unofficial chefs, Captains Marius Swanepoel and Carl Fuller prepared great meals for us and I took the entire group on a hike to the spectacular Everest Lookout from where we looked from a cliff onto a beautiful river valley. Furthermore the swimming pool, table tennis, finger board and beach volleyball court were thoroughly enjoyed by the participants when time allowed.

On the final morning we spent some time doing a “Cremation of Troubles” ceremony and the current second in command of the unit, Major Tladi confirmed the objectives of the unit after which the officers pledged their loyalty to the unit once again.

Major Werner Klokow, Communications Officer, 6 SAI Bn (Air Assault)
