Grahamstown was represented by about 30 swimmers who took part in the recent Aquabear gala which was attended by 26 swimming clubs from around the country. Some clubs travelled from as far as Johannesburg, Cape Town, Bloemfontein and East London.

Although it is the beginning of the swimming season, most of the locals swam personal best times. The outstanding performer of the Grahamstown swimmers was Tammy Price who broke the Eastern Province open records for the 50 metre freestyle, 50m backstroke and the 100m backstroke, winning gold medals in all three events. She already holds the 50m butterfly record so now holds four EP open records. Tammy's brother, Calvin Price also had gave an outstanding performance in the 50m breastroke, breaking the 30 second barrier for the first time in his career. Jess White, Tammy Price and Robyn Charter were also part of the Aquabear gold medal relay team.

Simon Pheasant was just out of the medals with excellent times in his three events. DSG/St Andrew's swimming coach, Tudor Lacey, said, “It was also encouraging to see our younger swimmers like Ralph Goveia who represented Zambia last month at the Youth Commonwealth games, Kelly Long, Jess White, Taryn-Maie Wille, Sasha Viviers, Dayle McLoughlin, Josh Starr, Hannah Rippon, Caydn Barker, Coralie Richardson, Matthew Danckwerts, Bryn Williams, Lauren Ramsay, Kirsty Brown, Sydney Lacey, Courtney Munna, Bella Davies, Natasha Dom, Claire Ter Morshuizen, Grace Biggs and Nicky Smith do so well at this early stage of the swimming season.”
