The Rhodes Shrews cricket tour culminated in a three-minute trolley dash around Pick n Pay, who hosted the raffle that raised money for the tour.

The Rhodes Shrews cricket tour culminated in a three-minute trolley dash around Pick n Pay, who hosted the raffle that raised money for the tour.

The draw for the raffle was done last Thursday at 8pm, when the main prize of Monday’s trolley dash was preceded by two voucher prizes – also provided by Pick n Pay.

Mark Fulton claimed the third-prize R50 voucher and Lance Steele won the R100 second-place voucher. Accounting student, Duncan Smith, won first prize – and the trolley dash.

Smith was somewhat shocked but later said, over the phone, “I was very stoked! I couldn’t really believe it… I never really thought I was going to win that raffle.”

Smith set a record for the Pick n Pay trolley dash, grabbing more than R1 800 worth of goods. Despite sticking to the strict rules of one item per panel, Smith glided up and down each aisle with great precision. “I probably went there about four or five times before Monday to look for nice stuff” said Smith, who spent the half-hour before the dash began doing a last-minute scouting of the store.

An eager crowd of supporters cheered Smith on and frantically ushered other shoppers out of his path. There was great excitement as fellow shoppers stopped to look in on the action. One very enthusiastic Nadia Froneman screamed repeatedly, “Get the mayo, get the mayo!”

Smith, calm and collected, was very happy with his performance, having managed to maintain a cool head throughout the chaotic dash. He was also very unselfish, in that he took mostly items that would be useful to the digs that he shares with six other people.

The Trolley Dash was a great success and capped an exciting raffle. The money raised from the raffle was invaluable to the Shrews on their tour and team manager, Greg Lowndes, said, “We would just like to say thank you to everyone who participated in the raffle – and of course a big thanks to Pick n Pay for the valued support.”
