Pupils from various township schools gathered at the Duna Library for a drug and alcohol abuse awareness campaign last Friday.

The event was organised by Gadra Advice and Community Work to raise awareness among schoolchildren about the risk of drug and alcohol abuse, using drama and poetry. Pupils competed for the titles of best play and best poem.

Members of Gadra's Siboneni Marimba band entertained the audience between performances.
Four schools competed for the best drama title and Nathaniel Nyaluza's drama group, led by Steader Nkwinti, won, followed by the N V Cewu drama group. Both schools received floating trophies, which they will have to defend next year.

The Cibi brothers – Azile from TEM Mrhwetyana Secondary School, and Anele, from Archie Mbolekwa Public School – won first and second places respectively in the poetry category.
Third prize went to Sibongiseni Magqaza, from TEM Mrhwetyana.

Gadra social worker, Judith Rungani, said her office had taken a different approach this year.
“Instead of us telling them about substance abuse, we thought the best thing was for them to tell their peers through drama and poetry,” said Rungani.

She said she took her hat off to the performers.
“Kids are creative. They know what substance abuse is, and I'm proud,” she said.
