The Sakhulutsha Soccer Development U13 and U15 Heritage Sports Festival will take place in Grahamstown from 23 to 25 September.

Affiliation to the festival is free and is open to all local U13 and U15 soccer, rugby and netball clubs and school teams.

All matches will take place on Rhodes University sports fields.

The Sakhulutsha Soccer Development Project is run by the management of Golden Stars Soccer Club, whose players are also helping to coach the youngsters.

Siyabonga Masinda, development manager for the Sakhulutsha Soccer Development Project, said about 35% of the players in the Makana soccer league had been through the project as youngsters. The project has been running since 2004.

A number of former Sakhulutsha players are also part of the Eleven Attackers and City Pirates sides, both of which play in the Cacadu soccer league.

“This is a factory of local football associations,” said Masinda.

Masinda said most of the Grahamstown East schools had already entered the Heritage Sports Festival.
