    Campus-community soccer a success

    The Peer Supporters seven-a-side soccer challenge, which was held during the Rhodes University HIV/Aids-awareness week recently, was won by the Warriors.

    Women's teams included Rhodes Students and Atshi, which combined with members of Peer Supporters. Men's teams included Warriors, Rhodes Staff, a combined Rhodes Human Resources/ Peer Supporters, Sociology and Chemistry.

    The Peer Supporters seven-a-side soccer challenge, which was held during the Rhodes University HIV/Aids-awareness week recently, was won by the Warriors.

    Women's teams included Rhodes Students and Atshi, which combined with members of Peer Supporters. Men's teams included Warriors, Rhodes Staff, a combined Rhodes Human Resources/ Peer Supporters, Sociology and Chemistry.

    The women's sides qualifying for the finals were Rhodes Students and Atshi/Peer Supporters. Students won the final 5–0.

    Students players were Yanga Thongo, Sindy Mkhwanazi, Ziviwe Magxala, Shoki Ramodike, Lyla Nqwane, Kwezi Mbina and Nosfundo Mfabane and player of the match was Nosfundo Mfabane.

    In the men's section, the following qualifying matches were played in order to determine which teams went through to the finals:

    Sociology vs Warriors: Warriors won 3–2
    Rhodes Staff vs HR/Peer Supporters: Rhodes Staff won 3–1
    Rhodes Staff vs Chemistry B: Rhodes Staff won (no score available)
    Warriors vs Chemistry A: Warriors won 2–0.

    The men's teams qualifying for the final were Warriors and the Rhodes Staff, with Warriors winning the final 3–0.
    The Warriors were Chanton Whitebooi, Mario o' Brein, Wayne Van Niekerk, Lucian Marney, Marcel Wales, Ruwayne Brooks and Duone Groats.

    Man of the Match was Marcel Wales.

    “Based on the enthusiasm from the spectators and competitors, we hope to make this an annual floating trophy event and include more teams.

    "In order for this to happen, the Peer Supporters have agreed to begin planning and organisation earlier next year,” said even-co-ordinator, Graham Kingma.
