Rhodes University's Live Music Society is in its tenth year and will be launching an album at their upcoming event this Saturday at Slipstream Sports Bar.

For a decade Live Music Society has been providing students and Grahamstown residents with live music events featuring local, national and international artists. Providing a platform for student artists to perform and develop their music, the society prides itself on hosting a variety of musical genres.

The exposure generated by these events often results in a widespread fan base in Grahamstown and beyond. The society hosts a number of events each year, and one of its most anticipated events is the annual Battle of the Bands.

This competition allows local bands to showcase their music and compete for a range of prizes, including professional recordings by Sonic Art Studio, and more recently, the opportunity to film a music video. With the imminent Battle of the Bands final tomorrow (Saturday) night at Slipstream Sports Bar, the society has produced an album of last year's winners, and will be launching it at the event.

"Having seen local bands perform, it's nice to see them be able to be given the chance to record. This album allows them to make their music available to people who might not have the chance to see them live," said Brent Shaw, head sound technician of the society.

"The album features Life of Riley and Folklore as the winners of the acoustic section, and Nia and Shackles & Bones as winners of the electric section," he said.

Winners of the 2011 Battle of the Bands will be announced after the final, and will be featured on the next album released by Live Music Society. The final battle for Grahamstown's best musical talent will begin at 8pm at Slipstream Sports Bar on New Street.
