Albany Bowling Club hosted the annual women's inter-regional bowls tournament last weekend. There were 16 teams playing for the honours of the best region, and the best individual team.

Port Elizabeth District, Eastern Areas and East London Districts each fielded three teams, Ciskei two teams, Frontier two, Midlands two and North Eastern Districts one. A number of Grahamstown bowlers represented the Eastern Areas side.

The tournament was played over three days, starting on Friday, with an opening ceremony on the greens, when teams handed their flags over to the hosting club for display. Charles Louw , who founded the tournament 13 years ago, was the guest of honour and he officially opened the tournament.

Eastern Areas finished second in the overall standings, while one of the three teams took first spot in the individual standings.

The final results in the overall standings for the region saw Ciskei taking top spot with 5.5 points.

Eastern Areas finished second with 5.33 points and third was Port Elizabeth Districts with 5 points.

In the individual standings, the winning team of Eastern Areas was made up of Kate Beavis (Kenton Bowling Club), Bryony Shone (Kenton), Marlene Jacobs (Albany) and Mabs Rees (Kowie).

Second was PE Districts (Moira Buchanan, Frieda Visser, Anne Jarmain and Yolandi Arndt) and third was Ciskei (Faith Hayidakis, Sandy Elliott, Betty Victor and Mary McLean).

The next Eastern Areas team, made up of Collette Reid (Port Alfred), Gwen Bartlett (Albany), Jane Armitage (PA) and Mandy May (Grahamstown) finished seventh, while the team made up of Sandra Wiblin (PA), Jenny Wallace (PA), Rina Goosen (Grahamstown) and Rose Charles (Kenton) finished eighth.

“Albany Bowling would like to thank all the sponsors and the members from the community that supported them. In a small community like Grahamstown we appreciate ever little contribution,” said Gwen Bartlett of the Albany Bowling Club.
