Cellist Caleb Vaugn-Jones (US) and viola player Renette Swart (Cape Town) will perform works by Spanish composer Manuel De Falla, Beethoven and Faure in a concert next Thursday night.

The concert, the fifth in the "Juan, Mariel and Friends" series, is in lieu of the Grahamstown Music Society's recital by Petronel Malan that had to be cancelled recently and for this reason, entry for music society members is free.

Vaugn-Jones and Swart will perform De Falla's 6 Canciones Populares for cello and Piano, Beethoven's String Trio in D major op. 9 no. 2, and Faure's Piano Quartet no. 1 in C minor.

The concert series, organised by Juan Munoz (violinist) and Mariel Ilusorio (pianist) this year aims to connect music with other art genres, and this concert will link music with painting and sculpture. Artists and art pupils will be present to create works inspired by the live performance of the music.

Caleb Vaughn-Jones was born in South Carolina and educated in the conservatories of Peabody (Maryland) and Lynn University (Florida). His versatility is shown in collaborations with jazz, samba, gospel, alternative rock and spoken word artists.

He is also a member of the Ritz Chamber Players, a chamber ensemble of the nation’s preeminent African-American musicians and composers, currently holding residencies at The Juilliard School and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

Vaughn-Jones's experience has also extended to theatre and film work: he portrayed the cellist Julian in Sarah Ruhl’s “Melancholy Play”, while the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, DC featured him in the American premier of Euripides’ “Ion”, with the score written for him by Los Angeles-based composer Michael Roth.

Vaughn-Jones recorded as soloist with the Prague Philharmonic in a recording for the video game, “Civilization V”, which was released in September 2010. When not busy performing, he enjoys spending time composing and arranging music. He is a supporter of the Jubilee Children’s Home, an orphanage located in Kerala, India.

Renette Swart studied music at Stellenbosch University and was a member of the Schwietering Quartet. She has wide experience as a chamber musician and was a former member of the Capab orchestra and is currently a freelancer in Cape Town.

The Juan, Mariel and Friends Series is generously sponsored by Die Rupert Musiekstigting. Chilean-born Munoz and Philippine-born Ilusorio are presenting their 5th chamber music series in Grahamstown.

The concert is on Thursday 8 September at 7.30pm in St Andrew's Drill Hall (off Worcester Street). Grahamstown Music Society members, please show your membership card at the door for free entry.
