Small businesses in the region can look forward to better support soon, says the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Nafcoc), after the recent launch of its Cacadu branch.
At the meeting in an office near the old Metro Cash n Carry wholesalers building last Friday morning, Nafcoc president in the Eastern Cape, Phumzile Ndendela, presided over the election of the five Grahamstown office bearers.

At the meeting in an office near the old Metro Cash n Carry wholesalers building last Friday morning, Nafcoc president in the Eastern Cape, Phumzile Ndendela, presided over the election of the five Grahamstown office bearers.
Newly elected secretary Nothembiso Xako told Grocott's Mail, "I am happy Nafcoc has opened an office here. It is the first of its kind in the Eastern Cape. It will give local small business owners access to information and hopefully help them develop."
Xako also said the office was planning to employ two people to deal with the daily running of the office. They would be assigned specific roles – one as co-ordinator; the other to deal with small, medium and micro Enterprise (SMME) queries.
According to their website, Nafcoc’s vision is to promote and facilitate the development of business in South Africa, thereby drawing the majority of South Africans into mainstream economic activity and the decision-making process.
Plans to open a skills development centre were in the pipeline, as the newly opened office sought to give back to the community and help alleviate Grahamstown's high rate of unemployment, Xako said.
She said the executive was in the process of advertising for the two office staff-members. Once they had got the office running, it would be open to members of the community.
The office is off Coben Street, behind the station, next-door to the old Metro wholesalers and down the road from the Day Hospital.
