Makana Municipality has been invited to take part in this year’s Southern Africa inter-municipal games, a sports event bringing together municipalities from various countries in the subcontinent from 24–30 September.

Makana needs R263 000 to compete in this year's inter-municipal games but so far the municipality has only been able to raise less than half of that.

The budget will cover transport, accommodation, food, medical and registration fees but each staff member is expected to contribute R400 towards the acquisition of a passport and forgo a travel allowance.

Speaking at a Makana council meeting on Wednesday, Municipal Manager Ntombi Baart said, as of yet, only R115 000 had been raised by various departments.

The games are an international event taking place annually in different countries; the purpose is to promote wellness, friendship and working relations through sport and culture.

Last year’s event was hosted by the Tzaneen municipality, in Limpopo. This year it will take place in Mbabane, Swaziland and will see more than 50 municipalities battling it out in 10 different sporting codes.

Makana is entering for soccer, netball, darts and snooker/pool events and about 50 municipal employees will take part.

The matter has not been approved by the council who did not want to commit to a project without the necessary finances. The council will meet again on 20 August to finalise the matter.
