Young local riders performed well at the South African National Equestrian Federation (Sanef) Schools League Nationals, in Johannesburg last weekend.

The Nationals took place over three days, with 2 751 entries and 97 class events.

Sixteen provincial teams competed and four pupils from Grahamstown were chosen to represent the Eastern Cape.

Megan Du Preez and Bridget Ford, from Kingswood College, came home with impressive results.

Megan, riding her pony, Feisty Rocky II, finished 12th out of 33 entries in the Working Hunter Level 1.

In the team category of the event, the pair came first out of 10 teams in this event.

Bridget, riding Silvern Star, achieved 10th place out of 61 entries in the 90cm Jumping class and 27th place out of 43 entries in the working riding class.

The Greeff siblings, Justine and Nicholas, from the Diocesan School for Girls and St Andrew's College respectively, were the other two Grahamstown pupils selected for the provincial team.

Justine, riding her horse, Samurai, scored 43rd place out of 51 entries in the equitation event.

Nicholas came 43rd out of 62 entries in the 80cm Jumping competition on his horse, Phoenix.

Describing the atmosphere, Bridget commented, “It was more chilled because it is schools’ league, so there is not as much pressure.”

From her experience, she said, the parents – many of whom bustled around, supporting their children at the event – were more competitive than the children.
