King William's Town Correctional Centre officer, Lulama Skepe, was arrested and charged with attempted murder after a fellow officer was shot and wounded on Wednesday afternoon.

In a media statement Correctional Services spokesperson, Zama Feni said that the incident took place after the acting head of the facility ordered Skepe to go home, claiming he was drunk and unfit to work.

Feni said that Skepe, who together with two colleagues had been posted at the entrance gate to the centre, then grabbed a firearm from the safe.

Allegedly Skepe fired repeatedly in the direction of the centre's main entrance. A female officer escaped unharmed but the third gate guard, Thembela Stefano, was taken to hospital after being shot in the right leg.

Eastern Cape Correctional Services Regional Commissioner, Nkosinathi Breakfast, expressed shock at the incident and said his department would conduct its own internal investigation.
