Department of Basic Education has encouraged students who need help for preparation to enrol in Adult Basic Education and Training classes. Both Rhodes University and the Makana Adult Centre offer these classes.
“Application forms for the May/June 2012 exams will be available shortly,” said Buyisile Jonas Cass, co-ordinator for Matric and Abet level 4.
Gadra Matric School Principal Melanie Lancaster said she was glad that the deadline had been extended.
“If you failed under the old syllabus, the department wouldn’t allow you to write the new syllabus,” she said.
Lancaster further explained that since 2009 when they began teaching the National Senior Certificate curriculum, Gadra had not offered classes in the old curriculum
“But we still have old curriculum textbooks, which we are happy to give to students who want to write,” she said.
An education consultant has warned that those wanting to write the old matric exam should not delay registering with the education department.
“Even though the cut-off is 2014, if you are not in the system and have never written matric before, you have to register before the end of September in order to write the exams,” said a consultant at Damelin Correspondence College.
Pupils over the age of 21 who did not complete matric under the Senior Certificate can register to write exams, but they have to submit a letter of application to the department, outlining how they intend to complete the required six Grade 12 subjects before the cut-off in 2014.
