The Mary Waters 1st rugby side enjoyed a classy 14-10 win over arch-rivals Nathaniel Nyaluza 1sts in their school derby at Mickey Yili Stadium last week.

Mawas led 7-3 at the break.

A large crowd witnessed the physical confrontation that mixed skill with pace.

From the onset, Mary Waters controlled the game with their speedy backs, causing some major headaches on attack.

After a number of attacks inside the opponents' half, Mawas's Tevin Pillay scored and wing Jermaine Walters put over the conversion.

Five minutes later, Nyaluza replied with a penalty to take the score to 7-3 in favour of Mary Waters.

In the second half, Nyaluza ran the ball wide, using their skill and sheer pace out wide, which kept the enthusiastic crowd alive.

In the 10th minute of the second half, Mary Waters flyhalf Siyabonga Mahapi scored his side's second try.

Walters again put over the conversion and extended their lead to 14-3.

Mary Waters had a number of scoring opportunities in the remainder of the second half, but good defence stopped them.

Nyaluza scored a converted try in the dying moments of the game, but it was all to little too late for them and Mary Waters won 14-10.

Errol Goliath, of Mary Waters, expressed his delight and said the game had been a hard and physical one.

He asserted that Mary Waters was the number three rugby side in Grahamstown, after Kingswood and St Andrew's.

“Credit must also go to the coaching and management staff for their contribution and efforts in the success of the team this year,” he said.
