Hillside Goju-Kai, of Port Elizabeth, were convincing overall winners at this year’s Saska East Coast Karate Open Championships at the Fish River Sun Hotel recently.

Hosts East Cape Shotokan-Ryu (Grahamstown, Port Alfred, Kenton-on-Sea, Fort Beaufort and Yellowwoods) placed second, while East London’s Border Japan Karate Shotokai placed third.

Hillside karateka also won both the premier men's and women's open Kata (forms) and Kumite (fighting) categories.

In an entertaining men's open Kumite final, last year’s winner, Shaun Kapp (Dragon Suburbs, Port Elizabeth), was unable to hold off an on-form Clayton Thom (Hillside Goju-Kai, Port Elizabeth).

Thom placed third in the Commonwealth Karate Championships in Sydney, Australia, recently. The results of the premier categories were as follows:

East Cape Shotokan-Ryu achieved seven gold medals, 16 silver and 14 bronze medals during the championships. Grahamstown's medal winners:
