The Adinkra Child Mentoring Programme hosted their annual 5km Rave Run at the DSG lower field last weekend to raise funds for their mentorship programme.
The programme pairs children from the location with mentors and pupils from Nombulelo Secondary School and Mary Waters High School have benefited so far. "We must never underestimate the power of having someone in your life who thinks that you're super-awesome," said Daniella Djan founding Director of the Adinkra Child Mentoring Programme (ACMP).
A big part of the programme is choosing the mentors and matching him or her to a child.
The process involves potential mentors signing up, attending a 25-minute information PowerPoint session, filling in a character profile, getting interviewed and being placed within the ACMP Leadership Team structure.

The runners were invited to bring pictures of their mentors and stick them on to a piece of A5 cardboard, next to the words, "I’m running for you". Many wore these as they ran. "I'm running for my mentor, who is my grandmother," Rhodes University student, Sumaiya Melansi, told Grocott's Mail.
Djan said, "Rave Run is more than just a run, but the beginning of something special. The event aims to acknowledge and celebrate the mentors in our lives, and in line with the Adinkra Child Mentoring Programme’s vision and mission, we want the event to highlight the ideals of humanity, which we believe are to Respect and Value Everyone, hence the name, Rave."
The day was not about winning, but rather provided a festive way of saying thank you to the people who had been pillars of strength in the lives of participants. "It was our first fundraiser and we are thrilled with the response of the Grahamstown community.All of them embraced the theme, joined in the Rave Jive and were full of electric energy and support. We salute you all," said Djan.
