A 28-year-old man briefly appeared in the Port Alfred Magistrates Court yesterday in connection with the death of well-known Port Alfred resident, Lou Zimmerman, last week.

The community of the small town is in shock as they struggle to come to terms with the murder of the 75-year-old sports coach and community worker at her home last Wednesday.

Grahamstown police spokeswoman, Captain Mali Govender, said Zimmerman was doing her laundry, when she was struck on the head with a blunt object.

A visitor found her lying over a basin in the yard at around 2pm and called the police.

She was taken to a hospital in Port Alfred, but died while being transferred to a hospital in East London.

While the motive for the attack was not known, a bicycle and a pair of shoes were stolen from Zimmerman’s house on the day of the murder. "The woman was still able to talk when the police arrived, but I cannot reveal what she said, as this might jeopardise the investigation,” said Govender.
