Rhodes University's contribution to journalism in Africa took another step into the future on Friday as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr Sizwe officially opened the new Telkom Highway Africa building.
“We are honoured and privileged that Telkom is able to support us in the manner that they do,” said Mabizela at the opening ceremony.
This will be the 15th year that the Highway Africa conference has hosted Africa’s largest annual gathering of journalists, academics and media experts from all over the world.
Telkom Group Executive Brenda Kali spoke at the ceremony where she emphasised the critical role that the media plays. “Journalism is a guardian that never sleeps,” said Kali, quoting Winston Churchill. “I believe these words hold true in the 21st century. Journalism is an inseparable part of the democratic system and champions the rights of the downtrodden and defenceless,” she said.
Telkom’s sponsorship of Highway Africa gives testament to the belief that journalism and media need to be strengthened in order to create stable and prosperous societies.
“Journalists need to be well trained and competent with emotional intelligence and integrity. It is therefore an honour to contribute to the School of Journalism and Media Studies’ ongoing pursuit of excellence,” said Kali.
Rhodes and Telkom forged their longstanding relationship through a shared commitment to developing journalism, media and digital technologies in Africa. Rhodes hosts the Telkom School of Excellence in Multimedia Computer Science which has been in existence since 1997.
Many students also receive scholarships from Telkom. The new Telkom Highway Africa building hopes to attract more students to the field of journalism. “Work that brings fulfilment is meaningful. A teacher, a nurse, a physician.
These are all meaningful jobs which are more valuable than money. Journalism is also meaningful. You can shape ideology, dialogue and society through your pen,” said Kali.
The 15th annual Highway Africa Conference is set to take place in Cape Town this September.
