A Nombulelo High School pupil is in a serious condition after being stabbed in the stomach, allegedly by a fellow pupil, on Wednesday.

Principal Mthuthuzeli Koliti said the two boys, in Grade 10 and 11 respectively, were playing with knives when one of them stabbed the other.

Emphasising that the incident was not related to gangsterism, he said, “One of the girls who was with the boys at the time of the incident confirmed that they were just playing.”. “We do not suspect that they were gangsters, because they are not troublesome learners at school,” he said.

But the school would investigate the incident, he said. “Where did they get the knives?” he asked.

He said disciplinary measures would be taken against the pupils. “It's a big shock for the us, as well as the other learners, because this has never happened in the school before,” he said.

He said he could not divulge the names of the pupils, pending a meeting with their parents. “We will have a meeting with the parents of both learners, and will report the incident to the district office of the Department of Education,” said Koliti.

Both boys were admitted to Settlers' Hospital. Hospital staff prevented Grocott's Mail from speaking to the pupils.
