A bizarre and grotesque break-in occurred during the Rhodes holiday, in which intruders vandalised and squatted in the student digs, smearing the walls with blood and defecating on the floor.
The break-in at the 3 Graham Street digs, occupied in term-time by five students, was discovered last Thursday.
The battery on the security alarm had died because the students' pre-paid meter had run out of electricity.
It gave the burglars time to remove an entire window from the wall to gain access to the house.
They smashed large holes in the bedroom doors and then proceeded to ransack and vandalise the entire house.
Resident Kyle Tate said the intruders had spent "about two days" in the house.
They made off with a laptop and an iPod Touch, but also extensively damaged the property, leaving behind bloodied handprints on the walls, as well as faeces on the kitchen floor.
The incident was reported to the police when passersby noticed a suspicious individual roaming in the garden.
