A Grahamstown man is back on his feet, 10 days after being literally within millimetres of losing his life.

A Grahamstown man is back on his feet, 10 days after being literally within millimetres of losing his life.

Milani Zabo, a waiter at Spur, finished his Saturday night shift on 9 July and decided to take advantage of Pick n Pay's late opening hours to do some shopping, before taking a taxi back to Joza.

Around 9.30pm he got off at the Cool Spot tavern, opposite the library in Dakile Street, and was setting off home with two packets of groceries, when three men approached him. One of the men pushed him. "I thought they were playing," Zabo said.

Then when one of them hit his face and grabbed one of the packets, he tried to fight back. But the men drew knives, stabbing him three times in the back and four times in the arm.

Zabo staggered to his feet as the men disappeared with his groceries.

Zabo started running and, after falling down several times, he arrived home. Zabo's shocked girlfriend phoned his father and he was rushed to Settler's Hospital. It turned out the attackers had punctured Zabo's lungs and, according to doctors, had missed his heart by millimetres, Zabo said.

Zabo, who is back at work already, spent five days in hospital while doctors worked to drain blood from his chest and prevent it from going into his lungs.
