A section of Mountain Drive has been closed to motorists this week, and could take up to a year before it is upgraded. On Tuesday morning, Kevin Bates, Makana Parks and Recreation manager, ordered closed the section from just beyond the Grey Dam turn-off,up to the toposcope turn off.

This is the result of the recent heavy rains and, indeed, water is still pouring down the road in sections, with a number of cars reported stuck.
Dave Robertson, of Makana Roads, said the upgrade to Mountain Drive was more than a year off. He said the R26 million allocated to roads in Grahamstown would first be used to tar the 160km of gravel roads in the township, which included a number of main roads.
Once these had been completed, they would focus on the many gravel roads, also in the township. After that, if there were any funds left, Robertson said they would then move on to Mountain Drive. Robertson said another problem with upgrading the section was that there was no gravel in the vicinity.
Robertson said his department was currently inundated with refilling potholes. Once the hundreds of potholes had been seen to, Robertson said they would begin sweeping away the gravel and sand now filling the sides of many roads.
