The Danone Nations Cup provincial finals soccer competition will take place in East London tomorrow (Saturday). NV Cewu from Grahamstown won the Cacadu play-offs and were to represent Cacadu at the event. However, Anele Ndyolashe , principal at NV Cewu said that due to other sport commitments they withdrew from the competition.

Keabetswe Taele of Intune Communications & Entertainment said that the withdrawal meant that runners-up Vusumzi Primary School from Addo would represent Cacadu.

The event, for U12 players, takes place at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in East London with kick-off at 9am.

Six regional champions will compete in the provincial finals to decide who will represent the Eastern Cape in the national finals.

The ultimate winner will travel to Madrid, Spain from 10 to 13 October to compete in the World Finals against 39 other nations.

Sandra Dorville, communications manager of Danone Southern Africa, says that winning is not the most important objective of this tournament: “Groupe Danone is committed to educating youngsters around the world on the importance of developing healthy habits and the Danone Nations Cup is the vehicle we use to get our message across. This year we will be holding the 12th edition of the Danone Nations Cup and over the years we have touched the lives of over 15 million kids, many of them are now young adults and we are encouraged to know that we have contributed to helping to make their dreams come true.”

The schools taking part are Nkunzimbini Junior Secondary School (OR Tambo), Backerville Primary School (Alfred Nzo Region), Charles Morgan Primary (Amathole), Vusumzi Primary School (Cacadu). Zanoxolo Primary (Nelson Mandela Bay) Umzixolo Primary (Joe Gqabi) and Senempumelelweni Senior Primary (Chris Hani Region).

The participating schools will be divided in two groups of four and three schools respectively. They will play a round-robin with the two teams that top the log competing in the final. The Eastern Cape winner will compete at the Danone Nations Cup National Finals scheduled to take place at Eldorado Park on 9 July.
