A single car accident that killed two passengers, and seriously injured another two on Sunday morning may be the result of drunken driving, say police.

A single car accident that killed two passengers, and seriously injured another two on Sunday morning may be the result of drunken driving, say police.

A maroon Mercedes Benz crashed on the Coega Bridge, on the way from Grahamstown to Port Elizabeth, and one passenger was air-lifted to hospital while the other survivor was transported by a Metro ambulance.

Captain Andre Beetge of the Motherwell police cluster told Grocott's Mail that it was suspected that alcohol was the cause for the accident, although at the time of going to print it could not be confirmed and investigations are still ongoing.

Beetge also said that it was too early to publicly identify the two deceased, as the police were still in communication with their families.

On Monday Die Burger (PE) identified the surviving two as Kevin Plaatjies (25), and Kevin Daniels (30).

According to Beetge, the two survivors of the crash were badly injured, although he could not disclose their exact condition.

The vehicle, as shown in pictures published in Die Burger, was almost completely written-off, and it is astonishing that two people managed to escape the wreck alive.

It was reported that the day before the accident, the four occupants of the vehicle had been seen at a popular nightclub in Grahamstown.
