The municipal manager will be pocketing an extra R100 000 in the new financial year, when substantial salary increases for municipal employees kick in. The outgoing council recently approved a budget for the 2011/2012 financial year that featured hefty salary increases for Makana Municipal officials.

Taking the largest slice of the cake is the Municipal Manager, who will be pocketing just over R1.2 million a year. This has increased from her current R1.1 million salary. This whopping figure includes a basic salary of R892 855, a travelling allowance of R157 021, a telephone allowance of R14 277, topped of with a sweet performance bonus of R148 981 – all totalling a grand R1 213 134.

The five directors are currently earning R871 000 each and the new financial year, which starts on 1 July, will greet them with a package of R927 569 each, which includes a performance bonus of R113 912. As for the Executive Mayor, the total salary includes transport and cellphone allowances and totals just over R668 000, a slight increase from the current R645 235.

Full-time councillors will be earning R491 000 and part-time councillors about R200 000, while the Council Speaker is looking at R289 000. Salaries have been increased at a budgeted 8% across the board for councillors, officials and general employees.

The increase carries substantially more weight for a Section 57 employee, however. For instance, a records clerk earns between R60 852 – R78 984. So an 8% increase on the R60 852 would mean that the employee's salary would go up by about R4 800. On the other hand the current basic salary of a director, R674 471, takes a hike of about R53 000.
