Infrastructural and Technical Services Director Dabula Njilo presented the Makana Water Services Plan. The main feature of this is the upgrading of the bulk infrastructure to meet increased demand.
Around R150 million is required for this upgrade, and the Development Bank of South Africa has approved a R50 million loan to this end.
Dr Josiah Nyagwachi, who has been deployed by the bank for technical support, explained how the funds would be used.
"The R50 million will be used in the James Kleynhans bulk water supply and augmentation projects," he said. These are the installation of an additional 450mm-diameter pipeline, the construction of a four megalitre reservoir at Botha's Hill on the Fort Beaufort Road and three additional water pumps.
Nyagwachi said Baart was finalising the loan agreement. He and another technical expert would oversee consultants and supervise contractors.
