Like most businesses in Grahamstown, Grocott’s Mail is preparing for an influx of students during the next week or so. It's an exciting time for the town, and of course it's exciting for us as well.

Like most businesses in Grahamstown, Grocott’s Mail is preparing for an influx of students during the next week or so. It's an exciting time for the town, and of course it's exciting for us as well.

So many energetic young people full of ideas and enthusiasm will naturally change the mood in any place. We have been preparing a special supplement for several weeks to coincide with the arrival of the new students and their parents.

In this Friday’s edition, we will offer the pull-out supplement, mainly to help parents of new students find their way around town. The supplement will include a map of campus and the shopping areas around it. Most regular readers of Grocott’s Mail will probably not find the map terribly useful, because you already know your way around town – but there may be a few interesting places you didn't know about.

The supplement will also carry loads of information, such as doctors’ contact details, and other lists that will certainly be of value – even to people who have lived here all their lives. We are also in the final stages of launching a revamped version of Grahamstown NOW, our mobisite (a website optimised for cellphones).

From Friday, you can go to www.ghtnow.co.za on your cellphone or computer and find a wealth of information relevant to anyone who spends at least a few hours in Grahamstown. It offers time-bound specials at various local businesses and also carries useful information about which movies are on, what’s on the radio, what the weather is doing and where the parties are happening.

You can also view a number of webcams from around town, updated every few minutes. Naturally, you can also find all the latest news from Grocott's Online, suitably formatted to be easily read on your cellphone.

Other businesses have also been getting ready for the rush. Student digs have been freshly painted and cleaned out. Shuttle services are ready to do the PE run and we are also sure that liquor outlets have been stocking up. The students are coming, if they are not here already, so let us welcome them and make sure that they and their parents have a fabulous time in Grahamstown.
