Four policemen who have been found guilty on charges of assault with intent to do grievious bodily harm, will know their fate next month. The accused appeared before the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Morne Sweeney (36), Cavin Siebritz (39), Trevor Williams (43) and Etiene Oelofse 40 were found guilty of assaulting Sisa Nyamanda by hitting him with clenched fists, kicking him with their boots on and spraying him with pepper spray.

The incident took place in Extension 6 in July 2008. In mitigation of sentence, their attorney Marius Wolmarans asked for a suspended sentence with an option of a fine. “Direct imprisonment will make them lose their jobs, and this will have detrimental effects on their families" .

He argued that they should not be removed from society by sentencing them to prison. Magistrate Ronny Lesele postponed the case to 7 February for sentencing.
