A woman recovering from her injuries after an alleged attack in her Hlalani home on the night of 8 January claims she was targeted after a kids' fight over a packet of chips.

The build-up to the incident began, according to Phumla Joja, when two boys were fighting over a packet of Go-Slow chips. The parents of the elder boy, said Joja, took his side and assaulted the smaller one.

Joja said when she had tried to stop their attack on the boy, the parents then turned on her. “They were so eager to fight with me, but I humbled myself until they calmed down," Joja said. "After shouting at me for a some time, they left for Vukani Township," said Joja. But it wasn't over.

"Later that night the family stormed into my house with a gang of people and bludgeoned me with a machete on my knee, ankle and arm," said Joja. Joja said she was taken to Settlers' Hospital. A neighbour had called the police when the attackers arrived, Joja said, but they had arrived only after the alleged assault.

In a puzzling twist, however, Grahamstown police spokesperson Mali Govender told Grocott's Mail she had received no report of the incident.
