Grahamstown swimmers returned home with 11 golds from the Eastern Province swimming championships last weekend. Thirteen swimmers form the city took part in a total of 51 events, and returned home with 29 medals.

The tally included 11 gold, 12 silver and six bronze medals. DSG swimming coach, Tudor Lacey, who coaches most of Grahamstown's top swimmers, was delighted.

"The results were beyond my expectations”. Simon Pheasant won five golds and two silvers, winning the 50 metre and 100m freestyle, the 50m and 100m butterfly, and the 50m backstroke. Calvin Price won three golds in the 50m, 100m and 200m breastroke.

He also won two silvers and 1 bronze. Calvin's sister Tammy won three silver and four bronze medals. Robyn Charter took home three golds and two silvers. She defended her title in the 100m freestyle and also won the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke.

MJ Rosslee, a Grade 10 pupil, won two silvers – in the 100m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke – and it was one-two for Grahamstown in those events, with Calvin Price twice runner-up. In the men's 50m freestyle Pheasant was overall winner, with Price in second.

The women's 50m freestyle was first, second and third for Grahamstown, with Charter, Tammy Price and Erin Graham in the top three positions. Matthew Danckwerts, a Grade 9 pupil, brought his personal best time down by almost one minute to win silver in the 800m freestyle. “Our other swimmers all did personal bests,"said Lacey.

This year's results show a great leap ahead for the city's swimmers: At last year's provincial championships, the total medal tally was one gold, two silvers and one bronze. Swimmers from Grahamstown who took part in the EP champs were Robyn Charter, Erin Graham, Jess White, Claire Ter Marshuyzen, Matt Danckwerts, Calvin Price, Tammy Price, Simon Pheasant, Vickie Dreyer, Kelly Long, Courtney Munna, Dayle McLoughlin and Nicky Smith.
