The 20th edition of the Sowetho Marathon took place recently, with a number of Grahamstown runners among the 4 879 finishers.

The 20th edition of the Sowetho Marathon took place recently, with a number of Grahamstown runners among the 4 879 finishers.

Fondly referred to as the “People’s Marathon” the race started and finished in the greater township of Soweto, passing the well known Vilakazi Street and Hector Peterson memorial. Simphiwe Tana, running in the colours of the Port Elizabeth-based Nedbank Running Club, was the first local home in 2:19:44. He was also the first Eastern Province athlete home.

Lebenya Nkoka (Lesotho) was the overall winner in 2:19:44. The women's winner, also from Lesotho was Mamorallo Tjoka who finished in 2:48.46.
