Rhodes University Sports Administration hosted a junior netball tournament at Nombulelo Secondary School last Saturday.

The tournament, sponsored by Absa, was held for U17 and U15 girls, and teams from Linge Stars, Joza Angels, Tiger Girls, Golden Eagles and Young Stars entered both sections. After the round robin part of the tournament, two teams in the U17 tournament, Young Stars and Linge Stars emerged as the top two teams and were ready to face each other in the finals.

The scores leading to the finals were:

U17 Tiger Girls 5 – Golden Eagles 10
Linge Stars 13 – Golden Eagles 10
Tiger Girls 3 – Young Stars 12
Young Stars 17 – Linge Stars 8
U15 Golden Eagles 25 – Tiger Girls 0
Joza Angels 2 – Golden Eagles 10
Young Stars 31 – Tiger Girls 2

In the U15 finals, Young Stars faced Golden Eagles in what was anticipated to be a cracker of a match, given the high scores that Golden Eagles inflicted on their opponents on the way to the finals. However, Young Stars had different ideas as they dominated the match from the first whistle, with some quick play and accurate shooting.

The score at half time was 13–2 to Young Stars. In the second half Young Stars increased their score to finish as winners with 18-6. In the U17 finals, Young Stars faced Linge Stars. Although Young Stars went into this match as favourites, everyone expected Linge Stars to give them serious competition.

And sure enough, the girls from Lingelihle gave the Young Stars a run for their money and were leading for most of the first half. However, Young Stars caught up with Linge Stars in the last few seconds of the first half, to make the score at half time 7–6 to Young Stars.

The second half started with a fast pace with Young Stars taking control. Linge Stars were just huffing and puffing chasing shadows and only managed to score 2 points in the second half. The final score was 17–8 to Young Stars. At the prize giving ceremony, participating teams received a full set of kit and bibs sponsored by Absa. The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture’s (DSRAC) MPP Section also donated a set of kit to all the teams. DSRAC also donated two trophies for winners in both sections.

The last event now in the local netball calendar is the Rhodes Sport Outreach Senior Tournament to be held on 13 November 2010 at Nombulelo from 9am to 1pm.
