Over 270 runners and walkers took part in The President's Award, Grahamstown Schools Youth Committee 5km fun run/walk on Wednesday Saturday 27 October.

Makana Municipality Councillor Nomhle Gaga welcomed the participants at the start of the event, saying “To the event organisers, runners and walkers- it is encouraging nowadays to see young people active in sport and other extramural activities. It is a common sight to find your peers consuming alcohol and drugs, engaging in crime and languishing in prisons. What is even more pleasing is that you are doing this to support others in our community. This gesture is the true display of ubuntu.”

Gaga added: “It is not about winning as you are already winners for the difference your efforts will make in the lives of others in our community. I challenge you to be examples in your community so that more young people can follow in your footsteps.”

The overall race winner was Simphiwe Tana, while Natalie Ross was the women's winner. The organiser of the fun run, Luyanda Matiwane said: “We were thrilled with the turnout especially as it was threatening to rain.

"The young people who organised the event were very happy. It was great having Councillor Gaga representing the Executive Mayor to start the race, I would also like to thank the many Grahamstown businesses who supported the wonderful diversity of spot prizes this year – the runners love them.”

Martin Scholtz of the President's Award said about R3000 was raised from the fun run, which will go to Grahamstown Hospice and the Youth Development Initiatives.
