Jason Meaton, a Grade 11 pupil at Graeme College, is quickly making a name for himself as one of the top mountain bike riders in the junior (16 to 18 years) boys category in the Eastern Province.
While he was in Port Elizabeth recently to attend the Eastern Province Cycling awards dinner, Meaton took part in a cross-country mountain bike event earlier the same day, and won the event where he beat a number of the province's top senior cyclists.
The Steeltek mountain bike event is said to be one of the most difficult courses in the country, and covers a distance of 42km. Meaton was awarded the Steeltek Floating Trophy, becoming the second Grahamstown rider to add their name to the trophy, after David Wright won the event in 2007.
Meaton said he was very chuffed with his win, considering he had to pull out of the same event last year, due to mechanical problems. At the EP Cycling award dinner later that day, Meaton was awarded his provincial colours for representing EP Cyling in cross-country mountain biking.
Meaton took part in three EP qualifying events during the past season, making the junior A team on all three occasions. He then took part in four of the five national cross country mountain bike races across the country, ranking 19th overall at the end of the national races in the junior category.
