One of the highlights on the Rhodes University calendar sports calender is the Rhodes Sports Awards dinner, which takes place tonight.

Invited guests will get a glimpse of the talented sportsmen and women who are at Rhodes, as well as the various projects run by a number of the Rhodes clubs. The Rhodes Sports Council Awards dinner recognises outstanding performances from individuals while the top clubs are also awarded.

The most prestigious awards of the evening are the Sportswoman of the Year and Sportsman of the Year awards. Other awards include Committee of the Year, Club of the Year, Performance of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Coaching Award and Inter-Res winners.

The guest speaker for the dinner is Olympian coach Ian Harries, who has also climbed Mount Everest. The dinner is organised by Sonja Buytendag, Sue Powers and Melissa Awu, with two students from Students Sports Council assisting – Jess Goble and Katy Nottingham. The evening's theme is “Countries of the World”, with the Graeme College marimba band performing during the evening.

The master of ceremonies are the current Sports Personality winners, Anesu Chingono (soccer) and AJ Elkington (hockey).

The finalists for the Sportsman of the Year are: (in alphabetical order): Adam Ludford (mountain), Andrew Roberts (hockey), Donovan Kennedy (canoe), Jerry Chigwande (volleyball), Michael-John Cannon (athletics) and Michael Patrick (aquatics).

Women: Alexandra Adie (canoe), Cari-Lee Haakonsen (aquatics), Natalie Ross (athletics), Nonsikelelo Sello (chess), Tayibah Eshun (volleyball) and Shingai Mangoma (basketball). Harries will also present a series of seminars on long distance running and fitness at Rhodes University before his speech at the dinner.
