A twelve-year old Grade 6 learner from St Mary's Primary School was crowned the winner of a local talent show held at the Recreation Hall last weekend.

Demaine Walters scooped up the winner's cheque of R1 000. The event was hosted by the Ultimate Savings Club in Grahamstown and Grahamstown's young and old came out in droves to witness the abundance of talent on show.

The hall was full to capacity and many people had to stand for the duration of the show. An estimated crowd of close to 1 000 people attended.

The event saw 20 contestants between the ages of 11 and 60 dancing, singing hip-hop, gospel and R&B. Among them was the eldest contestant of the night, Maureen Kivitts (60) who won many awards during her heydays.

Other contestants included the talented and well known Escalators dancing group, the Walters Brothers, Ettienne and Dwayne, who have their own band, Eloysious Goba and Westa Brown who are part of the Faithful Singers Gospel Group and Leilha Olifant who performed the Waka Waka dance by Shakira.

After round one, the top six performers were selected by the judges and a lot of eyebrows were raised. The selected top six were: Toysie “Jackson” Sauls who performed a Michael Jackson dance, Eloysious Goba who sang an tune from Kenny Lattimore with a gospel item, Clint of the Waka Waka and Westa Brown and Demaine Walters who also performed a Michael Jackson dance.

Demaine Walters won the first prize of R1 000, Candy the second prize (R500) and Toysie Sauls, a police officer, came third (R250).
