The Kingswood Jazz Band held a concert at the Grahamstown Botanical Gardens on Sunday to raise funds for the Rhodes Centre for Social Development bursary scheme.

Many families came out to support the event, bringing their own picnic baskets and relaxing on the lawns. Children were entertained with games while the band played some classic jazz numbers like Tuxedo Junction, In the Mood, Alexander’s Ragtime Band and Mack the Knife.

the money raised from the ticket sales was R2 500, but after a challenge from CSD’s Lara van Leyleveld to the audience to make further donations to earn an encore from the band, another R900 was donated.

The money will be used to assist underprivileged and vulnerable children to attend pre-schools. The Kingswood Jazz Band was started a year ago and has already developed an impressive repertoire.

All of the 10 members of the band also play in the Kingswood Concert Band. The Jazz in the Park Concert was organised by the trumpeter, NJ Bingana.
