A netball, soccer and rugby tournament, The Heritage Cup, is taking place in G’town where the winning teams will receive a floating trophy. The brainchild of local sports researcher Phumzile Adam, the tournament is supported by Makana Municipality, the National Heritage Council and the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.

Adam said the main objective of the competition “is to stimulate our youth through heritage and to participate in sport”.

Alicedale, Riebeeck East and Grahamstown are participating in the event, which started last weekend. Adam said in conjunction with the Heritage Cup, there will be an exhibition of the history of black rugby at Dakawa Arts Centre on Friday, 24 September, where a number of speeches will be made.

Adam said the exhibition will be open to the public and is scheduled to take place at 4pm. The rugby action continues this weekend, with Universals coming up against Klipfontein at 2pm, before the Old Collegians face the Wanderers at 3.30pm.

Lily White plays Easterns at 5pm. All the matches take place at the Albany Sports Club. Brumbies were scheduled to meet Swallows in a match last night. Results from last week’s rugby matches saw Easterns beat Winter Rose 24 – 16.

Old Collegians beat Universals 20-5 and Lily White beat Wanderers 15-12. The finals of the rugby competition will take place at Miki Yili on Saturday 25  September.

A number of soccer fixtures have also been played, with the finals and losers finals taking place on Wednesday 23 September at JD Dlepu Stadium.

In the finals, Eleven Attackers play Phoenix pioneers and in the losers finals, Golden Stars will face Joza Callies.

Adam said the netball side of the tournament was to be played between various primary school teams. However, due to the recent teachers’ strike the netball has been postponed.
