Great turnout for fun on the river

A number of anglers took part in the recent Port Alfred River and Ski Boat Club river competition, with 33 anglers taking part and eight juniors taking part. The competition attracted anglers from across the Eastern Cape, including Grahamstown, East London, Cathcart, Bathurst and Port Elizabeth.

A number of anglers took part in the recent Port Alfred River and Ski Boat Club river competition, with 33 anglers taking part and eight juniors taking part. The competition attracted anglers from across the Eastern Cape, including Grahamstown, East London, Cathcart, Bathurst and Port Elizabeth.


While no cob were caught, numerous undersized specimens were caught and released. Some undersized steenbras and grunter were also caught and released.

A total of 19 fish were brought to scale at the weigh-in, which was the highest number at one weigh-in so far this year.

The total weight of the 19 fish was 25.818kgs. The heaviest bag was won by Patrick du Preez (4.019kg), with Peter McClean taking second place.

The heaviest spotty prize went to Bruce Gie (2.630kg) and he also won the heaviest shad (0.581kg). The junior heaviest spotty was won by Joshua Burgess (0.725kg), while the junior heaviest spotty prize went to Aiden du Preez (0.604kg).

The overall standings for the year see Bruce Gie in first spot with a total catch of 30.802kg with David Drennan in second (24.180kg) and Patrick du Preez in third (21.259kg).

Carol Mitchley is the only woman on the overall catching chart with 0.626kg. The junior section is led by Aiden du Preez (3.039) with Andrew Nicol-John in second place with 1.068kg.

The next Port Alfred River and Ski Boat Club competition is scheduled for 2 October and all are welcome. The R50 entrancefee includes breakfast.

Entries are taken at Kingsley Tyres, Port Alfred, or phone 046 624 3325 before the closing date on 2 October at 11am.
