The acting CEO of Fort England, Mohammed Nagdee is a passionate mental healthcare practitioner. Nagdee recently took over from Patricia Darlene de Vos, who has earned herself 20 years of experience in mental healthcare.

The Johannesburg-born Nagdee began his career at the age of 20 when he worked as a research assistant at the Department of Anatomy and Human Biology at the University of Witwatersrand.

He graduated from the university with MSc and MBBCh degrees and also worked as a lecturer in Human Anatomy. Nagdee garnered his medical experience both locally and internationally.

In 1997 he was a House Officer at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg and a year later hemade a move to the United Kingdom where he became a Senior House Officer at Furness General Hospital in Cumbria, working in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology, and ophthalmology.

He then returned to Baragwanath Hospital in 1999 and commenced specialisation as a registrar in psychiatry.

He became a Fellow of the College of Psychiatrists in 2002 and in 2003 he returned to the UK and spent three years working as a consultant psychiatrist.

Nagdee returned to South Africa in 2006 shortly after the birth of his first child. He and his family decided to settle in Grahamstown, where he took up a post as Principal Specialist Psychiatrist at Fort England Hospital.

Besides his duties at Fort England, Nagdee is also a senior lecturer and associate professor in the Department of  Psychiatry at Walter Sisulu University
