Fort Brown police confiscated dagga worth R36 000 along the R67 when they stopped and searched a yellow Mazda 323 driving towards Grahamstown on Friday.

Fort Brown police confiscated dagga worth R36 000 along the R67 when they stopped and searched a yellow Mazda 323 driving towards Grahamstown on Friday.

Grahamstown Cluster Commander Spokesperson, Captain Milanda Coetzer said that the vehicle was occupied by three black males – two aged 19 years and one 29 years.

Constables Khetho Erick Mqadi and Sikhokele Skepe were manning the road block in the morning when they found three black plastic refuse bags packed with dagga and hidden in boxes.

The vehicle was confiscated and the three men were charged with possession of dagga at Fort Brown police station and taken to the Grahamstown police department cells.

According to Detective Constable Sebastian Du Plessis the three suspects were from Lusikisiki, in the former Transkei region, and were on their way to Port Elizabeth.

The three men appeared in the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court on Monday and the case was postponed for a bail hearing to Monday 30 August.

Makana Municipality Traffic Department together with Fort Brown SAPS conducted a joint Vehicle Control Point (VCP) along the R67 near Fort Brown police station.

The VCP formed part of a visible policing plan to deal with the movement of stolen property and related crimes. Grahamstown Cluster Commander Brigadier Vakala Moyake commended the members involved in the joint VCP.

“During joint operations of this kind, the commitment by all officials clearly leads to successes in the ongoing battle against drugs.”

He added that “Fort Brown SAPS may be commended for their endeavours, as this is the second case in seven days where drugs were found and arrests made for possession of drugs. Congratulations to Warrant Officer Mandise Hlwempu and his personnel.”
