Rhodes University women’s first basketball side, the Titans smashed Walter Sisulu university (WSU) 90-1 on Friday night in the women’s Inter-Varsity basketball quarterfinals.
WSU narrowly escaped being whitewashed; only finding the net from a penalty in the last two minutes of the game.
Chuffed Rhodes coach Tisco Mati said “they made me proud”. He believed the competition this year was tight and that this match was a build-up for future games.
Mati did not want to single out any players, saying “this team doesn’t have superstars;
it was a completely committed team effort”.
Winning not enough
The scorecard, however, spoke for itself with top scorer, number 15, Shingai Mangoma scoring 30 points.
“We did OK; we can play better though,” she said.
Mangoma credited “good team chemistry” for the Titans’ success and said they had been training for Inter-Varsity all year. She had been confident Rhodes would take home the gold.
“We are just warming up,” she said. The Rhodes women went on to beat NMMU 1sts in the basketball final by 25-9.
