Four-year-old Aiden du Preez was the surprise winner at the recent Port Alfred River Fishing competition. Aiden’s catch weighed in with a total of 2.435kg.
Aiden was also part of the winning team, Team Du Preez, along with his father Patrick and his grandfather Leo. The monthly river fishing competition was organised by the Port Alfred River and Ski Boat Club.
The total 24 anglers who took part in the competition included five women and four juniors, with two of the juniors under five years old.
The event started on Saturday and ran throughout the night, ending early on Sunday morning, despite cold weather which turned freezing in the early hours of Sunday morning.
It was also misty and the wind picked up around 5am. In total, 11 fish were brought to the scale, which organiser Bruce Gie said was “probably due to the water temperature being extremely cold throughout the competition”.
“One thing that really made me feel positive was the number of under sized grunter and steenbras caught. I personally caught and released about 15 baby grunter, which to me indicates that the river is still pretty healthy," said Gie.
The competition ended with a breakfast prizegiving where various awards were made. Patrick du Preez won the prize for the heaviest steenbas (2.969kg), heaviest spotty (4.504kg).
Rico van Niekerk was the heaviest bag winner (2.807kg), while Aiden won the prize for the junior heaviest spotty (1.481kg).
The heaviest mullet (0.668kg) winner was Bruce Gie. Andrew Nicol-John won the junior heaviest rock cod award with his 1.068kg fish.
