It was a perfect summer’s day and bright colours, flip-flops and summer wear were the order of the day. There was a variety of fun things to do, including a jumping castle, face painting and home baked treats from the tuck-shop and other stalls.

Spicy and sweet offerings for both young and old were for sale. Plants and book lovers could also indulge in the festivities with a secondhand book sale and a nursery with beautiful plants. And there were some  innovative games stalls ran by the learners themselves.

The fête was organised by the Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) to raise money for the school’s future projects.

The PTA committee includes a group of moms that are involved in bettering the school. One of the PTA moms, Sanet Olivier said, “We are doing it for the kids, the teachers do so much for them and it’s our way of supporting them.”

The chairperson of the committee, Cheryl Fischer added, “It means my daughter can get a better education so I am doing it for her.”

The mothers couldn’t fail to mention the involvement of some of the fathers, saying that they were a great help setting up and braaing the boerewors.

Riaan Vermeulen and Carl Fuller took up the enviable task of dealing with the sugar induced, hyperactive army of children running the obstacle course.

The acting principal of the school, Colette Kaiser said, “The turnout was excellent, as usual.” She also said that everything at the fête was donated by parents as well as some local businesses.

Kaiser said that the fête has always been a success, so much so that they were able to build a swimming pool and buy computers with internet access with the money they have previously raised.

By the end, sugar-crazed kids with painted faces left with their parents, satiated from all the activities. Grade 6 learner, Luvo Nkole, said,” It was exciting and nice to have fun with my family.”
