On Saturday night the Democratic Alliance (DA) ordered its Rhodes student chapter to cancel a party at Pirates Pizza where they planned to distribute free punch to Rhodes students.

The Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (Daso) ordered 150 litres of punch for the event that was organised to increase political awareness on campus.

“Students shouldn’t be baited by alcohol; they should be baited by a positive future,” said Francois Greyling, constituency operations manager for the DA in the Eastern Cape.

He said it was a “collective decision” to ask the society to call off the party because they felt it might give the DA a bad image. “We made a calculated decision instead of making a calculated mistake; we didn’t want to put our feet in our mouths,” he said.

However an unnamed source working at Pirate’s confirmed that the Daso society had already ordered the alcohol so they drank it themselves on the night.

“We just felt we are trying to pick up the youth of South Africa, not endorse binge drinking,” said Greyling. He added that “We endorse responsible alcohol use.”
