About 1 200 children are reported missing each year in South Africa. As part of the Rhodes Young Directors’ Season 2010, Madelé Vermaak presents Hard Candy, a gritty thriller that delves into the frightening reality of child abduction and abuse.

When a man in his 30s lures a teenage girl he met over the internet to his home, the tale takes an unexpected twist as he gets more than he bargained for when she takes the upper hand.

This is set against a backdrop of vibrant, realistic props. Based on the movie Hard Candy, the scenes do not deviate far from the script of the original, although the actors were well rehearsed and painted a vivid picture, especially during the performance’s more explicit scenes.

The next showing of Hard Candy is tonight at 7pm in the Rhodes Main Theatre. Tickets cost R10 and are on sale at the door.
