After Poole’s death, they started a Joyce Poole bridge afternoon which is now held every year at Masonic Hall to raise funds for Grahamstown Hospice who helped Pool a great deal before her death.
“We chose the Hospice because it was of great assistance to her in her last days before she passed away,” said van Hille.
This year’s donation of R6 260 surpassed the R4 111 that the group of bridge players raised in honour of Pool last year.
Poole arrived in Grahamstown as a young woman who became a welcoming face at the Grahamstown Building Society (GBS) and a musician in the Albert Honey Band.
Later she became a wife and mother, bookkeeper and financial advisor to many small enterprises in town and a well-respected accounting teacher at Kingswood College.
One of her greatest loves was bridge, which she played with her friends at their home and at the local bridge club.
