The army base held their annual potjiekos competition last week. The contest was between different teams made up of sections such as transport, firefighters, bikers, combat readiness section, Human Resource Management, chefs and quarter masters.

The participants had to cook a starter, main course and dessert. Dressed up in civilian clothes and aprons, the groups from the 6SAI Infantry Battalion cooked a variety of dishes including shrimp cocktail, lamb shank, vegetables wrapped in pancakes and chicken kebabs.

Desserts included banana split and cream and baked apples with custard. One of the judges, Sylvia Songontsha said the criteria of the competition were presentation and taste.

They also considered how the groups coped with cooking in an outside environment. One judge said she enjoyed most of the dishes.

“There is a  pancake that has vegetables in it that I tasted, it is cooked in a black African pot. I enjoyed that one.

It is the best meal I have tasted so far.” The group members enjoyed drinks while cooking, and were all confident about winning the competition.

The winning group was Combat Readiness which is in charge of training of soldiers at the base. Captain Loftie-Eaton who was the part of the winning group said “It feels good to win and we won because of the team spirit in the group and we were all involved.”

The winning group each won tool bags and a cap sponsored by Penny Pinchers and a R50 Dulcé Cafe gift voucher.
